Polymer Based Materials for Chemical Handling: Past, Present and Future

Polymer-based materials have been used since wooden vats were found to be corrosion resistant for pigment and dye manufacturing and properties of vulcanized rubber were discovered in 1832. Many materials have been invented since that time, and these materials are now commonly used for applications ranging from corrosion resistance to product purity. This presentation traces the evolution of polymer-based materials leading to the current state of the art. It reviews the challenges they face in the future and how the industry is responding to the critical issues related to accelerated testing for compatibility, nondestructive and non-intrusive testing for condition assessment and fitness for service evaluation.
