The Erosion of Materials by Liquid Flow

Erosion has been defined by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ANSI/ASTM 640) as “progressive loss of original material from a solid surface due to the mechanical interaction between that surface and a fluid, a multicomponent fluid, or impinging liquid or solid particles.” This definition is broad in scope and encompasses wear by solid particle impingement in a gaseous or vacuum environment, by solid particles carried by a liquid (slurry erosion), and by flowing liquids alone.
